A curious sight was recently spotted at the Cala Gonone Aquarium in Sardinia, Italy. Suddenly, a third shark appeared in the tank with two females. There has been a “virgin birth” of a new baby.
In the aquarium, there has been a pair of smoothhound sharks (mustelus mustelus) for the past 10 years. A male was not present in their tank, and they shared it with each other. So how did one become pregnant or give birth? Would it be considered a “virgin birth”?
